The
personal statement
or the college essay is something that is covered in most high school
junior and senior English classes. So why offer an internet service
to students who, for the most part, have access to this information
already? Here are four good reasons:
- Many
students don't always grasp what's involved in writing an effective
personal statement sitting in a crowded classroom and therefore
end up confused and frustrated
- We
provide one-on-one service as opposed to most high school classes
that have 25-35 students.
- We
have more time to tutor struggling students than the average high
school English teacher
- Our
Berkeley and UCLA educated editors have years of experience teaching
writing to students with a wide range of writing skills. In other
words, we've been there done that.

When
writing the personal statement keep the focus on the word "personal."
It must be about you; it must reveal who you are to the reader.
For this reason your statement must be authentic and real. Colleges
and universities have many different ways to ask the same question
but in the long run, they all boil down to the same thing:
"Tell us about yourself; tell us something about you that is
not obvious from looking at your SAT scores, your highschool grades
or your application file."
Avoid
personal statements that focus on the following:
The
class president essay (2) Failure in sports essay
(3) Lessons learned from foreign travel essay
(4) The trials and tribulations of being yearbook editor essay
The
above essay topics are overused and as a result bore admissions
people to death. By the time admissions officers have slogged through
several thousand essays, they are suffering from essay fatigue.
That is why your personal statement must be authentic and interesting
to pierce the fatigue barrier. If it's not, chances are the reader
won't make it past the first paragraph.
